This is a painting of everyday items that I have at home, or that caught my eye in Vinnies or the Salvos, arranged in ways that seek to elevate them out of the ordinary. The background is based on an illustration from Shaun Tan’s The Rules of Summer, a favourite and beguiling book. The book is propped up behind the still life set up. The idea of tableaux also appeals to me and has started to think about the arrangements as having a theme or meaning creating the internal logic of the painting through the choice and arrangement of objects.
