Artwork Description

High on the edge of a cliff, a lone puffin stood among wind-blown grass and looked out over the sea. The light was soft and low, and the dark sky behind made the bird's white chest and bright bill stand out.

Atlantic puffins nest in burrows on grassy cliff tops across the North Atlantic, from Iceland and Norway to Scotland and Canada. Between fishing trips they stand outside their burrows, watching the sea and the colony around them. Their colourful bill plates grow only for the breeding season and are shed in winter.

The portrait format places the puffin small near the middle of the frame, with fine grasses rising up the right side and deep, dark space all around. It is a calm, contemplative image about a small bird and a big sea.

Printed large, it is an elegant vertical print for a hallway, bedroom, study or coastal home. It makes a charming gift for anyone who loves seabirds or northern coastlines.
