In Botswana, a giraffe lifted its head above the treeline and looked straight down at me. The light was clean and clear, and behind it there was nothing but blue sky and soft white cloud.
Giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth, and their height lets them browse leaves that no other animal can reach, especially acacia, which they strip with tongues up to half a metre long. The short horns on their heads are called ossicones. Both males and females have them, and in older bulls they become bald and worn from years of sparring.
I framed the head and neck against the sky so the giraffe stands like a sculpture. The patterned neck rises from the bottom of the frame, and the face looks back with a calm, slightly curious expression.
It is a clean, bright, uplifting print with a lot of sky. It suits a living room, child's room, nursery or study, works beautifully in coastal and Scandinavian interiors, and makes a memorable gift for anyone who has been on safari.
