In the rainforest of Ecuador, two hummingbirds race toward the same flowering spike. A green-crowned brilliant leads, wings blurred, while a second bird closes in from behind. The orange and yellow blooms on the left are the prize.

Hummingbirds burn energy faster than almost any other animal and must feed every few minutes. A good patch of flowers is worth fighting for, and birds chase each other off favourite blooms constantly through the day. The green-crowned brilliant is a sturdy, glittering species of the Andean foothills, often the boss at a flower.

The flower spike rises up the left edge of the frame, and the two birds fill the open space to the right, so the eye moves from bloom to bird to bird. The soft blue-green background makes the warm colours of the flowers glow.

It is a lively, colourful print full of movement. It suits a living room, bedroom, study or child's room, and is a lovely gift for bird lovers and anyone who has travelled in South America.
