In the depths of the rainforest, a slender lizard lay along a leafy branch, its long tail draped down like a vine and its eye fixed on some movement in the foliage. It did not move once while I watched.
For small lizards the rainforest is a place where you are both hunter and hunted. They eat insects and spiders, and are eaten in turn by birds, snakes and larger lizards. Stillness is their best defence. Many can change their colour slightly to match their surroundings, and their patterned skin breaks up their outline against bark and leaves.
The branch, studded with small dark leaves, runs across the frame from left to right, and the lizard sits at its end, lit softly against the deep green background. It is a quiet, almost botanical composition.
It is a calm, natural print that rewards a closer look. It suits a study, bathroom, child's room or living room, and makes an unusual gift for anyone interested in reptiles and rainforests.
