Artwork Description

Three kangaroos stand up together in pale winter grass among the trees, all looking the same way. Something had caught their attention, and for a moment the whole group stopped feeding and stood tall to watch it. Then they relaxed and went back to grazing.

Kangaroos live in loose groups called mobs. When one animal stands upright and stares, the others usually follow, and that shared alertness is how they stay safe in open country. The big, rust-coloured animal on the left is a red kangaroo, the largest marsupial on earth. A large male can stand taller than a person when he rises onto his tail. Beside him, a smaller red kangaroo and a grey kangaroo hold the same pose.

The frost-pale grass gives the photograph a soft, quiet palette. The dark trunks frame the group on either side, and the woodland behind falls out of focus so the kangaroos stand out clearly. It is a very Australian scene, made without anything staged or added.

At large size it is a calm, warm piece for a living room, dining room or office. It is a strong choice for anyone who loves Australian wildlife, and an easy gift for friends or family overseas who miss home.
