Artwork Description

Three yachts moved together across open water during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, sails trimmed and crews working, the whole group a kind of symphony in motion. I photographed them from a chase boat in bright, hazy light.

The Sydney to Hobart starts in Sydney Harbour every Boxing Day and finishes 628 nautical miles later in Hobart. In the first hours the fleet stays close together, boats tacking and jockeying for position along the New South Wales coast before they spread out across the Tasman Sea.

In black and white the scene is all light and line: tall white sails against a pale sky, dark hulls and the glitter of the water. The yachts overlap in the frame, giving it rhythm and depth.

Printed large, it is an elegant, classic sailing image for a living room, study, office or beach house. It makes a natural gift for sailors and anyone who has followed the race.
