These two young giraffes were walking together across the plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya, never straying far from their mother. I followed them through the soft morning haze and waited as they paused side by side on the track, heads up, scanning the landscape.
Giraffe twins are rare. A mother giraffe almost always has a single calf after a pregnancy of about fifteen months, and the calves are born standing tall, close to two metres high. Young giraffes often stay together in loose nursery groups while the adults feed nearby, which gives them extra eyes against lions and hyenas.
The pair stand almost mirror images of each other, the same height, the same pose and the same pattern of patches, with soft greens and greys behind. It is a quiet, gentle photograph about closeness rather than drama.
The portrait format suits a narrow wall, a hallway or a bedroom, and the soft palette works beautifully in a nursery or child's room. It also makes a thoughtful gift for twins, siblings, new parents or anyone who has been on safari in Kenya.
