In Botswana, a lioness raised her head and looked out across the plain, alert and completely still. The background was soft and pale, so there was nothing in the frame but her face, her ears turned forward and her eyes fixed on something in the distance.
Lionesses do most of the hunting for the pride, often working together to bring down large prey. They are also the core of the pride's social life: sisters, mothers and daughters who stay together for life and raise their cubs as a group. Moments of stillness like this are often the prelude to action.
The frame is close and clean, almost a studio portrait. The warm tones of her coat, the white of her muzzle and the dark rims of her eyes stand out against the pale grey background, and the slight angle of her head gives the image its tension.
Printed large, it is a calm, powerful portrait for a living room, study, bedroom or office. The neutral palette suits contemporary interiors, and it makes a strong gift for anyone who loves big cats.
