Fine lines and soft patterns spread across the surface of the Mersey River at Latrobe in Tasmania, traced by a platypus as it dived and fed among reflections of green and gold.
The platypus is one of the strangest animals on Earth: a furry, egg-laying mammal with a duck-like bill and webbed feet. It hunts underwater with its eyes, ears and nostrils closed, finding insect larvae, shrimp and worms using electroreceptors in its bill. Latrobe, on the Mersey River in northern Tasmania, calls itself the platypus capital of the world.
The platypus is a small, dark shape low in the frame, almost lost in the shimmering bands of colour around it. It is a delicate, abstract composition, as much about the river as the animal.
It is a calm, painterly print. It suits a living room, bathroom, study or bedroom, and makes a meaningful gift for anyone who loves Tasmania or native wildlife.
