Artwork Description

Three pairs of golden eyes peered out of the hollow of an old tree. Three small owls, each at a slightly different angle, each watching me with a different expression: one curious, one cautious, one completely unimpressed.

Small owls like these often roost and nest in tree hollows, which give shelter from heat, rain and predators. Families stay together while the young learn to hunt, and siblings often sit shoulder to shoulder in the entrance during the day, dozing and watching. Their spotted plumage blends perfectly with the bark around them.

The square frame holds the three birds and the dark hollow tightly, and the soft light brings out every spot and feather. There is real humour in the different poses, which is what makes this such an engaging portrait.

It is a charming, characterful print. It suits a child's room, nursery, study or living room, and makes a wonderful gift for siblings, families of three or anyone who loves owls.
