A hillstar hummingbird perched on a bare stem, feathers fluffed, head turned, against a soft grey background. In black and white, the tiny bird becomes a quiet study in texture and form.
Hillstars are hummingbirds of the high Andes, living at altitudes where few other hummingbirds can survive. To cope with thin, cold air, they perch to feed rather than hover whenever they can, saving energy, and on freezing nights they drop into torpor, lowering their heart rate and body temperature until morning.
The portrait format and monochrome treatment strip the image back to essentials: the curve of the stem, the soft feathers, the sharp beak and the dark eye. It is calm, minimal and quietly elegant.
It is a delicate, understated print. It suits a bedroom, study, hallway or bathroom, works beautifully in monochrome and Scandinavian interiors, and makes a thoughtful gift for bird lovers.
