Artwork Description

A small green hummingbird sits on the very top of a golden flower spike in the Ecuadorian cloud forest, head tilted down as if inspecting what it has claimed. Hummingbirds are almost always photographed in flight. This one landed, and for a few seconds it simply sat there in the open.

Perching is a big part of a hummingbird's day. Hovering burns energy at an extraordinary rate, so between feeds they rest on a favourite lookout and guard the flowers around it. A bird sitting on top of a bloom like this is often doing exactly that: watching over its patch and ready to chase off any rival that comes near.

The colour is what makes the picture. The flower is a stack of glossy golden bracts climbing up the frame in one strong diagonal. The bird's back shines green, and the background falls away into deep teal and blue. It is a simple composition, a bird and a flower, with nothing else to distract.

On the wall it works as a bright, modern focal point. It suits a living room, bedroom, study or reading nook, and it pairs well with botanical prints, timber and plants. A memorable gift for a bird lover or anyone who has travelled to South America.
