In the cloud forest of Ecuador, two different hummingbirds arrive at the same red bloom. A green-crowned brilliant perches on the branch to feed, while a brown violetear hovers in on the right, wings spread and tail fanned. For a second the two birds face each other across the flower.

Hummingbirds are fiercely territorial around good flowers, and encounters like this rarely last. The green-crowned brilliant is a sturdy, glittering green bird of the Andean foothills. The brown violetear is more subtle, warm brown with a violet patch on the side of the head that shows when the light catches it. Seeing both together, at one bloom, is a small piece of cloud-forest theatre.

The branch runs in a long diagonal across the frame, with the red flower at its end and deep teal green behind. That simple structure holds the energy of the moment: one bird still, one in motion, and the flower in between.
