Artwork Description

During the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, a single yacht drove south under a towering sky. Cloud swirled above it like a storm about to break, and the sea glittered silver below. I photographed it from a chase boat as it heeled into the breeze.

The Sydney to Hobart covers 628 nautical miles from Sydney Harbour to the Derwent River in Hobart, crossing the notorious Bass Strait on the way. It starts every Boxing Day and draws boats from all over the world. Weather on the course can change fast, and crews race around the clock until they finish.

The portrait format gives the sky room to dominate. The yacht sits small near the bottom of the frame, sails bright against the dark water, while the cloud above swirls up and out of the top. The black and white treatment brings out every layer of it.

Printed large, it is a dramatic vertical statement piece. It suits a hallway, living room, office or beach house, and makes a natural gift for sailors and anyone who loves the sea.
