The Space Between Waves

The Space Between Waves explores stillness, movement and emotional atmosphere through layered monochrome washes on raw canvas. Inspired by coastal horizons, shifting tides and the quiet spaces found in nature, the work balances softness with expressive mark-making. Fluid layers of acrylic and oil stick move across the raw surface, allowing moments of transparency, texture and depth to emerge naturally. Influenced by traditional Chinese ink painting, contemporary abstraction, and artists such as Franz Kline and Mark Rothko, the piece reflects an ongoing exploration of inner and outer landscapes — the tension between calm and uncertainty, presence and absence, chaos and stillness. With its soft neutral palette and atmospheric layering, the work is designed to bring a sense of calm, depth and contemporary softness to a space while inviting slow viewing and reflection.

Josephine Morgan is an abstract artist based in Yeppoon, Queensland, working with raw canvas, acrylic paint and oil sticks. Her practice explores intuitive, atmospheric land and seascapes, often in a restrained monochrome palette.
Her work is a search for beauty and the sublime. It is an attempt to create the feeling of a view, while also holding something more human and emotional. Through layered mark making, she responds to feeling, process and chance. The movement of paint, spills and gestures guides the work as much as intention.
