Artwork Description

I love what the compression of a very long lens can do to a landscape. Especially one with rolling hills and street lighting. Driving on roads like this at night I think most people tend not to notice the landscape.

Professionally printed (Giclee) using archival UV-resistant pigment inks.

Check out the above video, which zooms and pans through the image to show all its beautiful details.

Understanding my personal attraction to the night hasn't been simple. Well illuminated scenes and bright colours in artwork may invoke happiness, warmth, contentment, the known and even understanding (through good visibility). I think these things are beautiful too. For me though, this only partially reflects reality and is out of balance in the art world especially. Exploring the unknown and unclear, making sense of the abstract, nebulous, when what we know isn’t obvious or initially reliable is in itself rewarding. Through making sense of the darkness we can bring light (or knowledge) to the unknown or poorly understood, sustain our happiness and open our eyes to deeper unknowns.

The night is also overwhelmingly peaceful, graphically stimulating and unexplainably addictive. There may be an undeniable element of emotional response in my images- but my aim is usually intended to be the opposite, more intended to make you think than feel.

It is important to me that my work holds some documentary value. Above all else, I respect, value and am motivated to do photography for this function it is uniquely placed to perform. This means I don’t bring or add my own light to the scene, pixel remove objects or “distractions” from my work. If someone or something is in the scene, they are not placed or directed by me.

The story, inspiration and/or commentary behind the image is included with the certificate of authenticity. I am also happy to answer brief, image specific collector questions about methods/equipment after purchase.

I offer some images at different print sizes, however the edition size (for example, the ’3’ in ‘Edition 1 of 3’) refers to the total number of prints of that image that will ever be offered for sale, regardless of size.
