Artwork Description

'Spinebill Stretch' - Original oil on stretched canvas 30.5 x 40.6cm (12 x 16in)

In early spring the bottlebrush outside my widow starts to bloom attracting all the usual local nectar eaters, but on rare occasions I caught a glimpse of the quick Eastern Spinebill. Usually, they’re too quick for my camera skills and darting around the foliage, getting chased off by the other honeyeaters. I was lucky enough to capture some great references, outstretched with that long curved beak to get into the far away last flower.

Artist Bio

Welcome to my profile, my names Josh and I’m an artist based in the Maitland NSW area with a focus on wildlife paintings. Two of my favourite hobbies are hiking and painting so I love nothing more than getting the camera and adventuring out on a bushwalk to find new subjects for my paintings. I really enjoy this process of capturing my own reference material and going back to the studio to browse through the photos. It’s always exciting when I find a brilliant photo amongst the hundreds I’ve taken, where the bird was in an unusual dynamic pose, or I've managed to find a new species I haven't seen in the wild before. From these reference pictures I sketch up a design and transfer it onto the canvas to create a unique artwork from the experience. I paint mostly on stretched canvas and canvas panel boards using oil paints as I enjoy the slow drying time and blending process.

The creation of an artwork is finalised with a bit of information about the bird while where possible, adding its sighted location, date and what I observed. I think if you're purchasing my artworks you must like/love Australian birds and might be a bit of a Twitcher yourself and would be interested to know a bit more about the bird that you now own. I also like the thought of my clients going out on location and trying to track down the very same bird they have hanging on their wall. If you do this, good luck and have fun!

Thanks for stopping by and reading through my bio, if you love the Australian outdoors and wildlife or are a fellow bird nerd, I welcome you to follow me to keep updated with the new birds flying onto my artwork page.
