Artwork Description

In these works I'm thinking about the precarious balance of life under the sea and the importance that oceans (and the organisms sustained by them) have in our everyday life. As well as being things of beauty and calm they provide much of the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat and medicines we use; in essence they are a critical part of the biosphere. The title is inspired by the lyrics of Pearl Jam song .
The work is unframed watercolour and ink on 300gsm watercolour paper.

Artist Bio

Jude Willis is an award winning West Australian artist who has a studio in Fremantle. Having worked in the field of medical research, she is very interested in the process of documentation and close examination. While her main focus is the environment and its macroscopic and microscopic ecologies, she is also interested in exploration of light, texture and pattern . Overarching themes include, memory, beauty and transience.

In her more detailed drawings and reflections she is investigating habitat and the preciousness of the natural world.
Weaving collage and poetry into images, she links our human world with the world of creatures in the wild.
In exploring these themes, she is particularly drawn to ornithology and lepidopterology.

She has work in several collections including; the Holmes a Court Collection, Woodside Petroleum and Central College of Art, Perth.
