Artwork Description

Sometimes there is a story!

"Flying Down to Rio" is a captivating blend of culture, nature, and music, brought to life through an abstract depiction of a blue and orange macaw soaring over Rio de Janeiro. Inspired by Peter Allen’s timeless song "I Go to Rio," this painting captures the vibrant energy of the city and the freedom of flight. The macaw, with its bold colors and graceful form, represents the tropical beauty and exuberance of Brazil.

What makes this piece truly unique is the subtle infusion of the artist’s Indigenous heritage, expressed through delicate spirals and dots woven into the composition. These elements serve as a tribute to the artist’s roots, blending the cultural significance of Indigenous art with the lively spirit of Rio. The combination of traditional patterns with modern abstraction creates a visual experience that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

"Flying Down to Rio" is more than just a visual feast; it’s a piece that radiates warmth, energy, and a sense of connection to both place and heritage. The vibrant teals and oranges bring a burst of color that can instantly brighten any space, while the intricate spirals and dots add layers of depth and meaning. This artwork is perfect for those looking to add a touch of sophistication, cultural richness, and a dash of joyful energy to their home or office. Whether it’s the focal point of a room or part of a larger collection, this painting has the power to uplift, inspire, and spark conversation.

Artist Bio

"I don’t know exactly who I am as an artist—or as a person—anymore, but that’s okay.

I’ve lived a fortunate life—many lifetimes in one. A life that sounds more like fiction than fact: I’ve been shot at, trapped in raging fires, collided head-on with semitrailers, lost overboard in floods, and stalked. I’ve sipped tea with kings, danced with stars, and chewed the fat with super-criminals and come out of it all with a smile. I often ask myself, 'If today was the day, would I be okay with that?’… The answer is, yes.

Art has always been my crisis counsellor, my soul’s balm, my homing beacon. After a decade off the grid, I’m back at it—making a painterly mess once again. I still don’t know exactly who I am as an artist, but maybe that’s part of the fun. Every painting I create is an offering to the wild, unpredictable adventure of life.
And in the words of Douglas Adams, I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.
