Hi! I’m Julia, the artist behind Florrie Street Studio. I grew up in country Queensland and was always inherently compelled to draw. Some of my earliest memories include spending weekends at my grandmother’s house, drawing dresses at her kitchen table and later, being enthralled by Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and any other glossy fashion magazine, pouring over the pages and drawing the clothes pictured inside.
Many years and one Creative Industries degree later, I’m now a fashion illustrator based in Brisbane (Meanjin). I'm still as enamoured by fashion and capturing it on paper as I was then. My work comes from delighting in how lines on a page work together to create an image and express fashion form.
I mostly work with pencils and watercolours and find inspiration in beautiful craftsmanship and good design, the way fabric drapes and falls, vivid prints, colour and embellishments. I also look to vintage fashion and the work of great 20th Century illustrators who captured fashion for both the elite and the masses before photography made them momentarily obsolete.
