Artwork Description

This is a quick drawing of Troy, using a Sennelier black oil pastel. There is a very fluid sense of movement here, as the linework is expressive and lively. Withholding some elements of detail focuses the viewer’s attention of the essential. I like the fact that you cannot rub out oil pastel and need to be selective and focused on the essence of the pose. This medium also forces you to look at the model and not your paper. Quick drawings do capture the dynamic energy, expressive quality and fluidity of the linework, which sometimes is lost in longer poses.

Artist Bio

I am a Sydney-based figurative artist, working in the media of drawing, painting, and sculpture. My work explores human psychology and the complexities of the human figure, while attempting to capture significant moments in time. I also use landscape, townscape, and interiors both to tell stories and to evoke moods. My style could be described as Expressionist, with elements of Surrealism, particularly in reference to my most recent work. Drawing is fundamental to everything I create and I spend much time working out my compositions in experimental drawings. My figurative drawings are characterised by the fluidity and rhythm of the linework, achieved after more than 30 years’ experience. And I love using pastels for their brilliant colour and texture. I am a former teacher and lecturer in art, but now focus exclusively on my artwork.
