I had to carry this painting home on a bus once. It was wrapped with transparent film so everyone could see the painting. The bus was quite full and I could hear people talking about the painting, especially a group of friends sitting opposite me. “It’s a tree trunk, you know, when it’s sawn off!” said one. “No, there are no circles in the middle, this is an eye. Can’t you see?” said another. “What do you mean? There’s no iris! This is a planet, maybe the sun?” said the third. Then the last one said “Well of course it’s an orange, look at the segments!” and I told her she was right. But I loved how this painting could be all those things to different people. And it’s not an exact depiction, but it was how I wanted to emphasise the freshness and energy of an orange, bringing out creativity.
