Artwork Description

Feather & Flame

There are moments when words simply aren’t enough — when a feeling of love, remembrance and hope needs to be expressed in another way. Feather & Flame was created from that feeling.

Stretching across a deep violet night sky, magnificent angel wings unfold in shimmering layers of metallic gold and rich white texture, catching the light from every angle. Beneath them, three glowing blue candles flicker softly, creating a beautiful contrast between cool blue wax and warm, radiant flames.

The raised 3D texture of the feathers gives the wings an almost tangible quality, inviting you to look closer and discover the layers of expressive brushwork and gold leaf throughout the painting. Tiny golden stars scattered across the night sky add a touch of magic and stillness.

At its heart, Feather & Flame is about comfort, memory and the quiet hope that remains when someone or something holds a special place in our hearts. The three candles can represent remembrance, love and hope — but their meaning is ultimately yours to discover.

This is a piece designed to create an emotional connection with the viewer and bring a feeling of peace, warmth and gentle light into its surroundings. Its generous 40 × 80 cm format makes it a beautiful statement piece above a bed, console, sofa or in a space created for reflection.

Artist Bio

I’m Julie McDonald, an Australian artist with a deep passion for creating expressive, various styles of paintings in acrylic.

For me, painting is much more than putting colour onto a canvas. It is a way of capturing feelings, ideas and moments that are often difficult to express in words. I love the process of starting with a blank canvas and gradually building layers of colour, texture and detail until a painting begins to develop its own character and story.

I work primarily with high-quality acrylic paints on traditionally stretched, gallery-wrapped canvas. My style moves between expressive realism, abstraction and imaginative imagery, allowing each painting to evolve naturally. I particularly enjoy experimenting with colour, texture, light and movement to create artwork that has both visual impact and emotional depth.

There is something incredibly rewarding about the moment a painting comes together, when the colours begin to work, the textures come alive and the original idea takes on a personality of its own. Every artwork I create is painted with care, patience and a genuine love for the creative process. My family have even said all you ever do is paint. Don't you ever get sick of it? My answer to this is how could I. Every peice is an exploration of different feelings and emotions. Painting is my love.

When someone chooses one of my paintings for their home, I hope they are buying more than simply a beautiful piece of art. I hope they are choosing something that makes them feel something — a sense of joy, calm, connection, curiosity or inspiration.

I want my paintings to become part of the spaces and stories they enter. Something you can look at every day and continue to discover new details, colours and emotions within. For me, that is one of the most special things about owning original art.

Each painting is created as an original work, with its own character and story, and I feel incredibly fortunate when one of my pieces finds its way into a new home.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my work and for supporting the journey of an independent Australian artist.
