Denim Dream

The only thing I love more than painting is fashion design. This original, one-off watercolour illustration captures one of my recent handmade sartorial creations: stretch denim overalls paired with a ladybird-red, self-drafted shirt.

Entirely “me-made,” the outfit is translated into a playful illustrated study, reflecting my broader creative practice across painting, design and making. Colour-block accents and a simplified, whimsical style captures both the garment and the joy of it's construction.

Denim Dream sits between fashion illustration and contemporary art, celebrating handmade design, personal style, and the intersection of clothing and creative practice.

Julie Purcell combines graphic design training with fine art skills.

As a child of the 80's, late twentieth century video games inform Purcell's distinctive rendering style. In some ways, this early home entertainment influence shapes not only her artistic process but also her understanding of human nature and the world around her.

After starting out in corporate design, Purcell earned a BFA (Hons) from Queensland College of Art in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in group and solo shows; judged art competitions and has herself been the recipient of multiple art prizes.
