Julie Purcell brings you her latest experimental painting project shaped, quite literally, by nostalgia. Combining her workshop talents and painting skills she conjures up a tangible long lost childhood memory. This searing piece of retro-Egyptology features a"virtual plein air" painting (made on location at "the temple of Karnak") presented in a 1990s style T.V shaped frame!

A scorched desert littered with temple fragments is depicted in blocky tones of yellow and orange. The vista stretches to a mountainous red ochre horizon . Standing before it all is Lara the original heroine of tomb raiding. Her back is to us, as per Caspar David Friedrichs masterpiece. She is contemplating the adventures possible in the panaromic Egyptian scene before her.

Julie Purcell combines graphic design training with fine art skills.

As a child of the 80's, late twentieth century video games inform Purcell's distinctive rendering style. In some ways, this early home entertainment influence shapes not only her artistic process but also her understanding of human nature and the world around her.

After starting out in corporate design, Purcell earned a BFA (Hons) from Queensland College of Art in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in group and solo shows; judged art competitions and has herself been the recipient of multiple art prizes.
