Artwork Description

A bold, expressive portrait celebrating male vulnerability and emotional depth. This contemporary figurative painting depicts a young man whose inner world is revealed through rich colour and decorative patterning. Painted in vibrant fauvist-inspired hues—deep purple, golden yellow, verdant green, and warm peach tones—his face is rendered with both strength and sensitivity.

This artwork is a symbolic portrait—a modern altarpiece honouring youth, introspection, and emotional nuance. The subject’s saint-like presence invites reflection on tenderness and pathos in an age of fast-paced, often dehumanising digital communication.

This decorative, emotionally charged work would suit collectors drawn to expressive portraiture, fauvist colour palettes, and art exploring contemporary masculinity.

Artist Bio

Julie Purcell combines graphic design training with fine art skills.

As a child of the 80's, late twentieth century video games inform Purcell's distinctive rendering style. In some ways, this early home entertainment influence shapes not only her artistic process but also her understanding of human nature and the world around her.

After starting out in corporate design, Purcell earned a BFA (Hons) from Queensland College of Art in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in group and solo shows; judged art competitions and has herself been the recipient of multiple art prizes.
