Artwork Description

This large, detailed oil painting on panel is a celebration of domestic life, vintage charm, and layered storytelling. Set in a retro-inspired lounge room, the composition is awash with warm 1970s oranges and browns—textures and tones that evoke nostalgia. Eclectic décor fills the scene: second-hand toys, collectables, Indonesian carvings, and a handmade “front bar” that overlooks the suburban sprawl. The carved figures form a whimsical procession through the space, mirroring the quiet rituals of everyday life outside. Rich in texture, pattern and personal history, this interior artwork invites slow looking and playful interpretation.

Artist Bio

Julie Purcell combines graphic design training with fine art skills.

As a child of the 80's, late twentieth century video games inform Purcell's distinctive rendering style. In some ways, this early home entertainment influence shapes not only her artistic process but also her understanding of human nature and the world around her.

After starting out in corporate design, Purcell earned a BFA (Hons) from Queensland College of Art in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in group and solo shows; judged art competitions and has herself been the recipient of multiple art prizes.
