Artwork Description

An epic beach spans the canvas, the sand goes on forever before reaching a thin strip of crashing waves and sea. The repetitive quality of the waves is caught in a simplified pattern of white foam punctuating the neat horizon. Above, mammoth cloud formations separate like tectonic plates to reveal pockets of simultaneously turquoise and bold blue sky. This is because I sat and painted, en plein air, in the same spot over many hours, seeking to capture not only the subtle sandy hues but the imperceptible shifting of time as early morning transitioned into midday.

Artist Bio

Julie Purcell combines graphic design training with fine art skills.

As a child of the 80's, late twentieth century video games inform Purcell's distinctive rendering style. In some ways, this early home entertainment influence shapes not only her artistic process but also her understanding of human nature and the world around her.

After starting out in corporate design, Purcell earned a BFA (Hons) from Queensland College of Art in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in group and solo shows; judged art competitions and has herself been the recipient of multiple art prizes.
