Artwork Description

This work is part of a photographic series representing everyday architectural urban features that serve a practical purpose but are often ignored, such as stairs, railings, walls, pipes, kerbs, concrete blocks. The project is about revealing the formal beauty and character of those things we see everyday but deem uninteresting and often dismiss as purely utilitarian city artefacts. My aim is to show the surprising beauty and originality that can be found in ordinary objects on the street and make people reconsider, and perhaps value, the urban environment they live in. The series uses the interplay of light and shadow to reveal unexpected urban forms that are somewhat absurd yet exude personality and offer a touch of humour. It is playful at heart and meant as a poetic response to urban boringness; an attempt to capture a certain kind of beauty that is intangible and fleeting, and easily goes unnoticed. This black and white film photograph, printed on archival Ilford Smooth Cotton Rag paper, shows beautiful rich grey tones and contrast. It will look its best framed in black and would suit a small, clean contemporary space.

Artist Bio

I am a visual artist working primarily with photography and other lens-based media, though I love to blur boundaries and sometimes incorporate aspects of performance and installation into my work. I grew up in France and studied architecture before moving to Australia in 2006 to travel and develop my photography. In 2018 I obtained a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania and I currently live and work in Hobart. In my practice I explore ways to raise questions about the different types of environments in which we live. I find mundane things inspiring and I think they can reveal a lot about us. The work I make is an attempt to represent ordinary experience differently, question what is around me and promote another way of seeing.
