Artwork Description

A shout out to the Gen Zer’s! You rock, keep is up.

I just felt that it was time to say it! I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I was born in the wrong time. I’ somewhere between Gen X and Gen Z, yes I am a Millennial technically, but that’s not what I mean.

Inspired by that feeling of a past self, to the nostalgia of a confused youth, the inappropriate elders of the late ’80s; and yet feeling more ethically, emotionally and politically aligned with Gen Z than any other generation. Thus, somehow a relatable memory of a time not yet past.

Youthful hours spent on adventures in places your parent knew nothing of, over cliffs without thoughts of return and off the end of ropes swings into muddy water. The magic of “Rose Video” and unattractive photos you waited days to have printed from the film.

Growing up rurally and in a mostly disconnected community. Like you still only get phone reception if you stand on the front left corner fence post and hold your phone in your right hand while doing a Lord of the Dance Yoga Pose. I’m not joking! It’s how I spend my teen years. I was raised like a Gen X, I’m into the music of the generation, know what a floppy disk and a cassette are because I actually used them, would play in the street till the lights came on, had a home phone connected via a cord and I still read real books, you know with paper. But at the same time, I am not backwards in my thinking, I feel inspired, passionate and am all about everything that Gen Z is (I even have TikTok) and am vocal about the things I believe in and support their fight for a better future. You know I’d almost go as far as saying us Millennials might be the first generation that can stand and are for the generation that follows. Am I right?

That little smile that sneaks out when you reminisce about the fun of the past; that’s what inspired memories and that's what I aspire sneaks out when you look at the free-flowing cohesive strokes of colour in this piece.

The pink representing the vivacious passion of our youth, yellow the fire of Gen Z, the gold that sparkle of hope for a better tomorrow, and finally a dash of the calm blue that is hindsight.

Anyway, I painted this piece in memory of my mixed combined generational youth. I hope you like it.

Artist Bio

Kalie’s keen interest in psychology sparked the idea for a comprehensive and thought-provoking body of work. She works in oil and paints traditional-style landscapes and clouds amongst the odd still life or portrait. Her work is predominantly a rebellion against the societal stigma around Mental Health. Driven by a connection between psychology and colour, her thoughtfully curated palettes and cloud formations explore curious feelings and states of being that are often not discussed. Her work celebrates the beauty of human diversity while advocating for understanding and healing.

Kalie skillfully combines the appeal of clouds with internal exploration inviting viewers to embark on an introspective journey of their own mind. Kalie often displays her work in ornate gold gilded frames as a physical representation of the mask we all often wear when dealing with strange feelings and mental health. Ultimately, Kalie’s art is an invitation to explore the intricate tapestry of human emotion and find solace in shared experiences, simultaneously encouraging conversations that lead to healing, growth and societal acceptance while aiding the viewer in feeling less alone in their experience.
