Kanchan Arur is a self taught landscape and abstract artist based in Sydney, Australia. Kanchan’s artistic talent was noticed at a young age when she received her first art prize from a renowned artist in her home town of Bangalore, India.
While in college, Kanchan also attended a few courses in art. In addition to her artistic flair, she has a love for home interiors, which led her to pursue a short course in interior design.
Kanchan spent 5 years sailing around the world with her husband, who worked with the Merchant Navy. Her time out at sea, travelling between countries, truly inspired her love for watercolours. She is an avid lover of nature, and was able to capture these moments away by painting scores of land and seascapes.
After moving to Australia in 1998, Kanchan took a break from art and has now re-immersed herself back into her passion with art. Over the years, Kanchan has completed a variety of courses at Ku-ring-gai Art Centre, broadening her painting skills between watercolours to oil and acrylic, as well as mastering new forms of art, blending her skill of landscapes with the abstract.
Kanchan creates unique artworks, inspired by her heritage and traditions commonly found in South-Asian textiles. Her paintings are primarily ikat inspired which is a vibrant and ancient textile art form. Its unique aesthetic has found its way into modern abstract art and home decor, bridging the gap between ancient craft and current trends.
