‘Reflections’ depicts the moment just prior to confession, where uncomfortable truths are confronted. The work lends from both photorealist and illustrative styles to draw out the anguish and unique experience etched on the subject’s face. Careful use of blending and shading are used to achieve this.
The immediacy and rawness of the pencil media lends to the impression that the subject is laid bare in the given moment. Self-reflection often occurs in periods of dissociation, or where one feels separated from time and space. Greyscale is used to convey this timeless quality, as well as the universality of these moments.
