Artwork Description

'Remembering Devil's Kitchen' is a loose landscape painting by Kate Wise. Kate has used fluid acrylics and a range of pouring, dripping, blowing and scraping techniques to capture the emotion and awesome beauty of this natural landmark called Devil's Kitchen, near Linton, west of Ballarat. A winding road leads into the valley where basalt columns rise up from the Woady Yallock River. Trees and scrub grow wild. Kate painted this expressive work, not from a photo, but as a process of reflecting on the feeling of exploration and adventure she felt on those Sunday drives with her family. As a child, this place felt vast and wild and just the name was exciting fuel for the imagination of a budding artist.

Kate is an acrylic painter living on Wadawurrung country just outside Ballarat, Victoria. She says 'nature is an inspiring force' and it drives her creation of calm, feminine and flowing paintings that are original, fresh and lively.

You can enjoy Kate's work as vibrant landscapes, abstracts and florals, but in her current series of works, she is inviting you to delve a little deeper, as she explores the psychological terrain of landscape painting. Kate believes that the capacity to observe the complexities of nature, draw meaning and experience self-growth and renewal, are gifts that painting offers both the artist and the viewer.
