Did you know? "When The Lorax first came out in 1971 (the year Kate was born), it was very controversial. The logging industry was extremely unhappy about its environmentalist message, and the book was banned in some California schools. Some parents were worried it would turn children against the forestry industry." Kate painted this work in response to learning about the book being banned. She uses the bright warning colours of nature in the work to represent the environmental destruction denounced in the book. The painting has a surreal feel, which is an expression of how mind boggling she finds this reaction to a children's book with a pro environmental message.
