Artwork Description

"Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark”, is a painting characterized by a nuanced use of colour and symbolism, inviting viewers to contemplate profound themes within the narrative. The title draws inspiration from the opening lines of Dante's Inferno.

Inspired by Dante’s writings the deliberate choice of a muted palette dominated by browns establishes an atmosphere of subtlety and introspection. This tonal selection connects to the earth, grounding the thematic elements in tangible, organic aspects of existence. The deliberate emphasis on light and shade of forms within this restrained colour scheme introduces a focal point, suggesting a journey must be undertaken.
The "forest dark" adds mystery, symbolizing life's struggles and uncertainties. The desolate "wasteland" intensifies thematic gravity, prompting reflection on depicted events. The contrast between the dark forest and organic forms highlights the dichotomy between growth and decay, life and death.

In summary, the artwork engages viewers in a contemplative exploration of life's journey, transformation, and the interplay between light and darkness. The artist's meticulous use of symbolic elements, muted colours, and contrasting landscapes results in a visually rich and layered narrative, encouraging reflection upon the intricate complexities inherent in their own life trajectories.

Artist Bio

I'm Kath Harding, a surrealist artist and architect based in Sydney, Australia. Mostly I paint landscapes...but I’m curious about shifting truths and perceptions, the places where the ordinary becomes distorted, and the extraordinary arises from the mundane. These thresholds tell the stories of our collective truths.

influenced by surrealists and the diverse tapestry of Australian painters, I am a storyteller, weaving visual narratives that defy logic and embrace the irrational. Each brushstroke or manipulation of materials is a deliberate act to disrupt the conventional, opening thresholds to the fantastical. I seek profound insight into the limits of our uniquely human condition.

To me, there is nothing more beautiful than this act of revelation. The opportunity to share this journey from fragility to opportunity for growth with others is truly priceless.
