The scope of emotions experienced by those who perform, observe and live flamenco dance includes polarizing binaries of pleasure and pain and nearly everything in between. Such was my experience painting Australia’s most powerful flamenco dancer Chantelle Cano – as she raises her hands sharply towards her eyes and stares at us with defiance.
My painting ‘A Dance of Defiance’ captures an empowering moment- where Cano’s embodiment of flamenco’s spirit –‘El Duende’ (refers to a magical internalized passion) – becomes an exalted expression of a liberated woman.
