Katherine is an emerging artist, who is deeply interested in obscured narratives in her work. She is fascinated by the stories told by places and people, and how different perspectives can create overlays of meaning. As such, her work is often conceptual and not confined to a single medium. Contained narratives may span a collection of pieces.
Professionally, Katherine has been practising for over 25 years as a Landscape Architect, which has given her a keen eye for details: how places change over time, and how they are used and changed by people. In recent years, her work has focussed on Landscape Interpretation - drawing out the stories of places and telling these stories through her designs, usually via non-textual means.
Her artwork is characterised by a delight in experimentation: it is effectively a form of adult play. She is also interested in building from first principles - for example, excavating local clay to create ceramics ‘of place’; spinning or collecting local plants, dyeing with colours from the area, weaving with the resultant fibres. Through these means and ephemeral art, she allows herself to connect more deeply to the places in which she works.
Katherine is a passionate advocate for storytelling as a way of connecting and understanding place: both those stories which contribute to how a site is now, and those which we may create in the future. She is fascinated by the way that landscapes underpin our identity; have a life independent of us; and geologically layer stories if we are open to hearing them.
Katherine is a member of MAVA (Melbourne and Victoria Artists Collective), NAVA (National Association for the Visual Arts), Interpretation Australia, and Association of Sculptors Victoria. Her artwork is currently held in both public and private collections within Australia.
