Artwork Description

Pelican Lagoon is the largest wetlands on Kangaroo Island. The Lagoon has historic interest in that Mathew Flinders and a botanist, Robert Brown climbed a giant sand dune, the eminence, in 1802 at the end of the lagoon. Their purpose qualified the thinking that the island was the furthest point south.
Upon seeing the sight of Pelican Lagoon with the abundance of wildlife and Pelicans was quoted,
‘Alas, for the Pelicans, the golden age is here’. He then knew of the importance and significance of the wetlands area.
The time has arrived when man will change the face of the island.

Science and art do mix. In the 70's, I worked and studied on the Great Barrier Reef as a post grad student and taxonomist. In those days we drew our own studies with the old rapidograph pens and endless journals. Through my many field trips around the world in those days and now living on Kangaroo Island, I use the stories, behaviours of animals and the landscape reflected in my journeys to inform my process.
Birds, reptiles, insects, mammals all have the most remarkable patterns to attract prey, reproduce and camouflage themselves. I use these beautiful patterns against a landscaped background to create conflict.

My other passion is doing realist drawings of animals and animal portraits.

I would consider myself a neo expressionistic artist and painting medium in oil. I love the sculptural effect I get from it and enjoy experimenting with different mediums. I use the best art materials in my work. I have worked now for 6 years as a part time artist, but I have learnt that you need to trust and follow your dream.

Surrounded by nature, inspiration is never a problem.
