Dressed to Express

This piece was painted for a 5x7 Art Prize with the theme "Freedom". I think drag queens personify freedom in such a wonderful bright vibrant way. Dressing to truly express themselves. Iridescent watercolour medium was added to the background, dress and lips to create a fine glitter effect. Created using mixed media including artists quality watercolour paint, pigment ink and iridescent watercolour medium on 100% cotton watercolour paper, this was then mounted to a canvas panel and sprayed with a protective Matt spray. Artwork size: 5" x 7" - 12.7cm x 17.8cm. Artwork is unframed, but since it is a standard 5"x7" size you can easily insert it into a shop brought frame by removing the glass from the frame (open frame remove glass add the work in and then close the frame as usual).

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, I have always loved drawing and art. Art has always been something I have loved and come back to as a hobby as time and inspiration arose. I am mostly a self-taught artist and only started using the watercolour medium late 2016. Before this I mainly used graphite and coloured pencils for basic drawings. Mid 2017 I completed a short watercolour botanical art course that improved my ability and understanding of the medium and has been the stepping stone to my growth as an artist. I joined the Hobsons Bay Arts Society mid 2018 after participating in the 5 x 7 art prize and have really enjoyed and learnt a lot through workshops and demonstrations held by the society. Being a member of the society has also opened up new mediums to me, after doing a portrait course I now love using pastels and charcoal too. My subject matter is usually nature based as I am constantly inspired by the world around me.
