Artwork Description

'South Melbourne market' is my latest mixed media on canvas painting from my new series of botanical paintings with poetry.

Inspired by a poem by my friend and a memory from a shared experience browsing stalls at South Melbourne market, stopping by at the flower stall and buying a bunch of native botanicals. Flannel flowers and Geraldton Wax flowers were our choice on that day in September 2024, inspiring me to take many photographs of these flowers and to create a painting now, a year later.

Flowers, as my ongoing inspiration, bring moments of light hearted joy and bring my attention into the life experiences I remember even through time as a foggy memory, with colours playing in sync like music.

Poetry, like lyrics, complementing images and colours, in a moment of inspiration.

Painting features a few lines from a full poem, which my friend might publish next year as part of her book of collection of poems.

'South of the city, hustle and bustle,
wondering the buildings is like a puzzle,
every week, most days, most hours
selling everything
from baked goods to flowers,
goods made local or
from around the world...'

(the rest of the poem will be published in her book)

Artist Bio

Katia Ksr is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Torquay. Katia’s diverse art practice spans across painting, mixed media, site-specific installation and community arts, engaging with notions of time, place and belonging.

On Bluethumb, I am sharing my series of paintings and mixed media works from my ongoing practice of painting flowers with and for others stems from my cherished memories of joy and care while painting with my grandmother with many cups of tea and homemade treats. She had a way of slowing me down and paying attention, in the moment, always up for a chat!

My practice of painting flowers continued through painting flowers for friends as gifts and collaborations with other artists, most recently, in a group exhibition Conversations with Flowers as part of Open Studios Sunshine Coast in May 2024. Through painting flowers and sharing our stories, it turns out we, the artists, and visitors had many life experiences in common, which highlights ongoing themes of art being essential for our wellbeing and connection.

Through my art practice, I also explore my emotional connection to the ocean as a unique environment essential for our wellbeing, personally and collectively.

Expressed as a moment which transcends time - somewhere between memories, present experiences and dreams.

Moments spent in nature are those small miracles of finding balance, hearing myself breathe and reconfiguring my heart’s rhythm.

My bodies of work from various exhibitions across my multi-disciplinary creative practice will be available for viewing in August 2025 as part of my website launch and upcoming exhibitions.
