Since a small child I have always loved the natural world and would often get lost in my daydreams whilst playing in the hills or at the beach with my beloved grandmothers, who instilled a great love of colour, poetry and the Arts.
The ‘Flora and Fauna Australiana natives series’ established in 2017 is a vibrant representation of the environment and bird species including found gems I have collected along my journey. Through artistic conventions that include colour contrasts, metallic and fluorescent light sources, these natural narratives illuminate from the plywood surface which the paint is splashed upon. The main inspirations stem directly from purely Australian organic forms, endangered , extinct wildlife species and in particular birds.
Katie paints from her Mitcham studio run a her art business Katie Sandison Fine Art with art products, art prints, teaches adult art workshops in galleries and art schools runs Kds Art Adelaide a children’s art school in Eastwood, Mitcham and paints everyday. Her work is stocked in 18 gift shops and galleries throughout Australia.
Katie is passionate fine artist and teacher who captures past and present native endangered, extinct and common Australian flora and fauna species, though vibrant water colour/acrylic paintings depicted on wooden surfaces. She creates a crucial connection between the ordinary birds like the familiar iconic magpie and more rare extraordinary species hardly seen any more, in a unique and distinctive style of painting. This purposeful documentation of whimsical scale distortions highlights the importance of individual species exposing an illusionary world stemming from exotic colour schemes and the metallic reflections.
‘To capture the essence of beautiful forms within the natural world macro or micro, in order to engage and inspire an audience is a wonderful thing for an artist to give to the world.’
Katie studied Visual Arts at North Adelaide School of Art at the age of 16 and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Visual Art and A Bachelor of Education Post graduate in Secondary Visual Art and Design in 1999.
