Artwork Description

This piece is inspired by the tranquil moment of observing galahs settling in their evening routines from the comfort of my back veranda. The scene captures the gentle activity of galahs making their beds in the trees behind my house as dusk settles over the landscape. The approach emphasizes the calmness and subtle beauty of everyday nature, using soft, layered brushstrokes and earthy tones to evoke the serenity of the moment. The work celebrates the simple, yet profound connection with the natural environment, drawing influence from plein air painting and the impressionistic tradition of capturing fleeting, atmospheric scenes in rural Australia

Artist Bio

Katrina is a conceptual artist now residing in the Flinders Ranges, after spending thirteen years living, studying, and working in the UK. During her time there, she participated in numerous exhibitions and artistic opportunities, including being shortlisted for the Aesthetica Creative Works Competition in 2011 and being published in the Aesthetica Creative Works Annual in 2012. She also exhibited at Tulipamwe, Namibia in 2015, and was involved in the 'Margin to Margin: Women Living on the Edges of the World' projects between 2016 and 2020.

Returning to South Australia and reconnecting with her first love, painting, Katrina now predominantly works with enamel, water-based mediums, and phosphorescent gels (glow-in-the-dark). She enjoys transforming any surface she encounters, whether it’s canvas, saw blades, shovels, crates, glassware, ceramic tiles, or even rabbit traps, into a canvas for her creative expression.

Her subject matter is diverse, ranging from seascapes and animals to machinery and portraits. Katrina’s work continues to explore themes of memory, environment, and the boundaries of form and material, constantly pushing the limits of traditional art spaces and surfaces.
