Artwork Description

Kay Miki creates incredible Chigiri-e (Japanese Rice Paper art). Chigiri-e works by tearing and cutting small pieces of specially made and imported Japanese rice paper. None of the shapes and images are painting or pre-drawn. They are created by the artist composing the work, drawing and cutting each piece of coloured rice paper. The pieces are then carefully glued onto high quality white canvas. It is not decoupage, rather a much more intricate and traditional Japanese art applied to contemporary style compositions.

Artist Bio

Kay has enjoyed drawing and painting since her school days, often winning school prizes. Originally from Japan, she moved to Australia, first to Melbourne and Sydney before settling in Adelaide.

Kay studied at Adelaide Central School of Art between 1996-2000. Since then, she has completed many pieces of art for competitions, for galleries around Australia, as well as by private commission.

She creates both incredible oil paintings in the realism form, and Chigiri-e (Japanese Rice Paper art). Chigiri-e works by tearing and cutting small pieces of specially made and imported Japanese rice paper. None of the shapes and images are painting or pre-drawn.
