Standing at the ocean’s edge, she watches the waves rise and fall, their rhythm echoing the passage of time. Each swell carries memories—moments of joy, sorrow, resilience—before retreating into the vastness of the sea. In this fleeting yet eternal movement, she sees her own journey reflected.

The Ebb of Time captures a moment of contemplation, where the past and present merge in the ever-shifting tide. The mature woman, weathered by experience yet unwavering in presence, stands as a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived. The crashing waves remind us of time’s relentless flow, yet also of its cyclical nature—how it shapes, erodes, and renews.

In painting this piece, I wanted to explore the way we perceive time—not as something lost, but as something woven into the fabric of who we are. The ocean, much like our own existence, is vast and unknowable, yet deeply personal. Through this work, I invite the viewer to reflect on their own passage through time, to honour where they have been, and to embrace the endless horizon ahead.

Kay’s work is heavily influenced by Gustav Klimt and the Art Nouveau movement, with a modern twist. She incorporates bold, vibrant colours and metallic highlights to bring her subjects to life, creating a sense of enchantment and energy in every piece.

After a successful career in graphic design, Kay returned to her first love—fine art—and has since garnered recognition as a finalist in the prestigious Henry Jones Art Prize. Her paintings reflect her personal journey, balancing meticulous detail with an emotional depth that invites viewers to connect with her story.
