Artwork Description

A native of South Africa, the Strelitzia, or Bird of Paradise, seems right at home in the West Australian Wheatbelt region, where It can be found in many gardens. Its bird-like shapes and bright cadmium oranges, ultramarine blues, carmines and purples with lime green stems and leaves make a striking picture. Created from various papers first steeped in baths of bold colour then cut into abstracted shapes, this collage painting is a reminder of hot climates and Mother Nature’s incredible powers.

Artist Bio

Kaye Devlin is from Western Australia’s Wheatbelt Region, and now lives at Perth. She took her first drawing lessons in the 1980’s, then continued studying art techniques and history in the 1990’s. Kaye studied for formal qualifications in Visual Art and Contemporary Craft including a diploma, with C Y O’Conner TAFE College at Northam WA from 2008 to 2012. Influenced in many ways by Goya, Turner, the Fauvists and Picasso and Australian artists Joy Hester, Brett Whiteley, Rover Thomas and Charles Blackman Kaye’ s works have evolved to be bordering on the abstract, yet representation is always present in them. She finds inspiration in early icons and images, ancient frescoes and mosaics, cave painting and rock art. Kaye’s works have been acquired by Rosewood Care Group Inc, Shire of Northam, Shire of Bruce Rock, RSM Australia Accountants, Water Corporation of Western Australia, Shire of Toodyay, CY O’Connor TAFE College and numerous collectors in Australia and overseas. While trained in all mediums Kaye especially likes to work in mixed media on paper. Mythology and folklore often feature in her paintings. Kaye has been described by art lecturers as an experimental artist, and this is how she is happiest when working on a piece. While the world around her provides the subject, Kaye responds by using colour and texture to create an image that depicts the real, yet shows that it can be an illusion of reality.
