Artwork Description

"Cup of Sanity" is a playful yet thought-provoking piece that blends realism with abstraction, inviting the viewer into a world where whimsy and symbolism collide. A charming piglet, rendered in meticulous detail, perches inside a strikingly patterned teacup—its expression both curious and content. The teacup itself features a bold cubist-inspired face, a nod to the fragmented nature of identity, perception, and the ways we seek comfort in the everyday.

This work continues the themes explored in "Royal-Tea", where the merging of animal portraiture with unique ceramic designs creates a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Here, the piglet symbolises innocence, resilience, and perhaps a touch of mischief, while the teacup serves as a vessel of familiarity—something we often turn to for warmth and solace in uncertain times.

The background is kept warm and neutral, allowing the central elements to command attention while maintaining a sense of balance. A soft golden halo subtly frames the piglet, adding an almost sacred reverence to an otherwise playful composition. This motif echoes religious iconography but is used here with a touch of humour, elevating an everyday moment—like sipping tea—into something almost ritualistic.

There is a deliberate contrast in textures: the fine brushwork capturing the piglet’s soft fur, the smooth ceramic sheen of the cup, and the painterly strokes in the background. Light and shadow interplay to create depth, making the teacup feel tangible, as if the piglet might tip it over at any moment.

Much like "Royal-Tea", "Cup of Sanity" embraces a modern aesthetic while celebrating classic artistic influences. It’s a piece that invites multiple interpretations—some may see it as a lighthearted take on the chaos of daily life, while others might find a deeper meaning in the relationship between structure and spontaneity, order and play.

For lovers of contemporary realism with a surreal edge, this painting offers both charm and conversation. Whether hung in a kitchen, dining space, or eclectic gallery wall, it will no doubt add a sense of joy and curiosity to its surroundings.

Artist Bio

Born in Adelaide and now based in Queensland, I’m an Australian artist creating expressive figurative and nature-inspired paintings. My work explores feeling, movement and the way colour shapes atmosphere.

After many years in the health and social services sector, painting became a way to restore balance and reconnect with creativity. It has since grown into my full-time practice, with a focus on contemporary pieces that blend intuitive colour work, layered texture and emotive storytelling.

My current direction includes the Blooming Veil series and larger portrait-style bird pieces. These works use acrylic and mixed media, with oils used in selected projects. The pieces listed here on Bluethumb are earlier works that remain available as unique one-off originals.
