Artwork Description

Fishscapes is part of a new series inspired by the vibrant world of tropical fish. Having worked as a textile designer for over 30 years, I’ve always been fascinated by pattern and repetition. The natural markings of fish, from spots and stripes to shifting scales, carry the same rhythmic qualities that once drew me to fabric design.

In this work, I explored those organic patterns through acrylic and collage, layering torn paper to build rich textures that echo the underwater environment. The result is a dynamic composition where colour and form create movement, much like a school of fish in motion.

This piece brings a joyful energy to a room, its bold colours and intricate surface textures offering both visual rhythm and a sense of play. Painted on paper, it celebrates the harmony between nature’s design and artistic interpretation.

The painting (26.5 x 26.5cm) is mounted on Arches paper with total dimensions of 38 x 39.5cm

Artist Bio

I studied at Southampton College of Art where I started to create rich textures using collage on both paper and canvas.

I have spent all my working life in art.
More than 40 years as a freelance textile designer and then I concentrated on establishing myself as a full-time artist.

My art reflects life with it's basic structure, interrupted by the unexpected happenings of life.
I'm interested in textures and surfaces of weather beaten walls with peeling paint and graffiti.
These walls are silent witnesses of the past and canvases for the future. Ken Barker
