I work from found and created photographs and I was captivated by the sense of awe that these two men were experiencing when watching the sunrise from the remote waterhole in the Central Australian desert. This painting was the first of what I eventually settled on for my "style" at university. I had been experimenting with reducing detail as I'd previously been a highly realistic painter. I wanted to incorporate expressionistic backgrounds with pop-art foregrounds and I think I've done it really well in this painting. I particularly love working in backgrounds wet in wet so as to allow the paint to "move" and different colours to intermingle. I feel this lends itself well to paintings depicting water in particular. And in this painting I developed my love of painting water. I was also interested in achieving depth in the movement of the paint layers which can be seen in the detail photograph.
In this painting I've used high quality artist acrylics and mediums, and a high gloss oil based varnish. As with most of my paintings I personally mount it on an "inbuilt" frame and then paint the painting as the frame and board as one unit. I recommend hanging it directly from the two D rings that I supply on the back of the painting, not from a wire. Noting that the painting mount is made of wood and is subject to environmental influences such as humidity which may create short term movement in the board hence why I recommend 2 hooks holding the painting directly to the wall.
