Formal study in the Built Environment (Interior Architecture and Design) lead to seeing the world through a lens that looks to nature, and to history for inspiration, and challenges the ‘what makes for good design’. The elements and principles of balance, harmony, colour and texture are the main considerations in my compositions. On a canvas, light and contrast become paramount too. More recent creations have incorporated line work from my design drawing background, although in a loose, less rigid manner.
Creative projects and interests have always been nearby including painting, primarily with acrylics on canvas, although I have a play with most mediums. As life is experienced, capturing scenes through photography, where the photographs become the reference point and catalyst for many of my paintings, albeit in an impressionist/representational and interpretive manner. I know that my paintings are complete when I feel like I have captured the essence of the scene/story/place/emotion.
When not in my studio painting, or harnessing inspiration, you will find me in a classroom. The move from my work in the design field to teaching design in high school settings is for me about inspiring students into creative professions and pursuits, as well as imparting my passion and knowledge. The vision is to spend my days immersed in nature, painting, expanding my gifts, and sharing my creations. It is an exciting stage of my life and artist journey to be able to prioritise time to painting and the evolution of where this will lead.
